Amazon Expands Global Warehousing & Distribution (GWD) to Shanghai

Amazon has announced another major expansion of its Global Warehousing & Distribution (GWD) network with the opening of a new distribution center in Shanghai on July 16, 2026.

The new facility enables sellers to store U.S.-bound inventory closer to manufacturing hubs in China before Amazon manages cross-border transportation and replenishment into U.S. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) fulfillment centers.

The Shanghai warehouse joins Amazon's existing GWD facility in Shenzhen, strengthening its growing logistics network across China.

As part of Amazon's Global Warehousing & Distribution program, sellers can take advantage of low-cost origin storage, integrated Amazon Global Logistics (AGL), and automated inventory replenishment—all designed to simplify international fulfillment while reducing supply chain costs.

What is in the New Update?

Amazon's new Shanghai GWD facility officially opens on July 16, 2026, expanding the Global Warehousing & Distribution network that first launched in Shenzhen earlier this year.

The program allows sellers to store inventory at its manufacturing origin in China while Amazon Global Logistics manages cross-border shipping, customs processing, and replenishment into U.S. FBA fulfillment centers.

Instead of shipping inventory directly to the United States immediately, sellers can strategically position stock in China and allow Amazon to replenish inventory based on customer demand, improving supply chain flexibility while reducing storage costs.

Why Shanghai? The Strategic Location Advantage

Shanghai is one of China's largest manufacturing and export hubs, making it a strategic location for Amazon's latest logistics investment.

Located near the Yangshan Deep-Water Port, the new 20,000-square-meter distribution center primarily supports fast-moving goods sourced from East China. Combined with the Shenzhen facility serving South China, Amazon now operates a dual-region logistics network covering two of China's largest manufacturing ecosystems.

For sellers sourcing electronics, furniture, home products, and consumer goods from the Yangtze River Delta, this expansion provides faster access to Amazon's international fulfillment network while shortening transportation distances to origin warehouses.

Key Benefits for Amazon Sellers

The expanded GWD network offers several operational and financial advantages for sellers.

  • Lower Storage Costs — Save up to 45% compared to U.S. Amazon Warehousing & Distribution (AWD).
  • Faster Replenishment — Inventory can reach U.S. fulfillment centers up to 7 days faster when using Amazon Global Logistics.
  • Automated Inventory Management — Choose AI-powered replenishment or maintain manual inventory control.
  • End-to-End Logistics — Amazon manages shipping, customs clearance, transportation, and FBA replenishment through one integrated solution.

These improvements help sellers optimize inventory placement while reducing operational complexity across international supply chains.

FOB Shipping Support & Customs Flexibility

Amazon has also expanded support for FOB (Free on Board) shipping terms across all GWD locations.

This gives sellers greater flexibility when managing export documentation, customs declarations, and port handling responsibilities while simplifying export tax rebate processes.

The update also supports changing U.S. customs requirements, including stricter import screening and electronic filing requirements for consumer product safety documentation, making compliance easier through Amazon's integrated logistics network.

Free Storage Promotional Offer (July–December 2026)

To encourage adoption of the program, Amazon is offering 30 days of free storage for eligible inventory received at GWD facilities between July 1 and December 31, 2026.

The promotion applies to both the Shanghai and Shenzhen warehouses, giving sellers an excellent opportunity to test the service before the busy Q4 shopping season.

With Amazon recommending that holiday inventory enter its network before October, this limited-time promotion can help sellers reduce storage costs while preparing for peak demand.

What's Next — Global Expansion Roadmap

Although Global Warehousing & Distribution currently supports U.S. FBA replenishment, Amazon has confirmed plans to expand the program to additional marketplaces, including the European Union, United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada.

Amazon is also expected to launch another GWD warehouse in Ningbo later this year, further strengthening its China logistics network.

With China representing more than half of Amazon's global seller base, these investments demonstrate Amazon's continued commitment to improving international fulfillment while competing with rapidly growing cross-border marketplaces.
