Off-Amazon demand for Amazon brands

Google Ads for Amazon: Bring Shoppers In From Outside Amazon

Amazon ads only harvest demand that already exists inside Amazon. Google reaches the shopper before they open the app โ€” and when that traffic is tagged properly, Amazon can see it, measure it, credit part of the referral fee back, and reward the sales velocity it creates. We build and run that loop end to end.

The ceiling

Why Amazon-Only Traffic Stops Compounding

Nothing is wrong with your Amazon ads. The problem is that every brand you compete with is buying from exactly the same pool of shoppers, on exactly the same terms. Here is what that costs you.

01

You only harvest demand โ€” you never create it

Amazon ads reach people already searching on Amazon. Everyone else's product is in that same auction, and the size of the pool is fixed by Amazon's own traffic.

02

The same click costs more every quarter

More sellers, same shelf space. You are not losing skill โ€” you are bidding in a crowd that keeps growing while the number of good placements does not.

03

You cannot build a customer list on Amazon

Amazon owns the relationship. No email address, no pixel data you control, no way to reach that buyer again without paying for them a second time.

04

Your brand is undefended on Google

Someone searching your brand name finds a competitor's ad at the top of Google. Inside Amazon you protected it. Outside, it was never yours to begin with.

05

One policy change and the tap turns off

A listing suppressed, a category gated, a campaign type retired. If every sale comes from inside one platform, one change takes the whole revenue line with it.

06

No asset leaves the platform

Years of spend on Amazon buys you no audience, no creative learnings you can port, no data asset. Switch it all off tomorrow and you are back at zero.

External traffic

What Google Ads Do for an Amazon Listing That Amazon Ads Can't

This is not a replacement for Amazon PPC. It is the layer above it: demand created before the shopper ever opens Amazon, measured once they arrive, and credited back to you when they buy.

Reach the shopper before Amazon

Most product research starts on Google, not on a marketplace. Being present at the research stage means the shopper arrives at your listing already knowing why they want it.

Get credited for the traffic you bring

Amazon's Brand Referral Bonus returns part of the referral fee on sales that come from outside Amazon. It is the only advertising Amazon pays you for rather than the other way round.

Turn outside sales into ranking pressure

Additional sales at additional velocity are a ranking input. External traffic that converts gives Amazon a reason to place you higher โ€” which is what reduces what you pay inside Amazon later.

Build audiences you actually own

Run traffic through a page you control and you get remarketing pools, lookalike seeds, email subscribers and behavioural data. Those assets keep working after the campaign ends.

Defend your own brand name

Competitors can bid on your brand terms on Google. A small, always-on brand campaign is cheap insurance that stops someone else intercepting a shopper who was already looking for you.

Learn faster than the marketplace allows

Google tells you which message, price point and angle earns the click before Amazon ever sees it. That learning sharpens your listing, your creative and your on-Amazon campaigns too.

The listing still has to do the selling. If the detail page cannot convert the traffic you send it, external spend just makes an existing problem more expensive โ€” which is why we start with listing optimization before we scale a single campaign.

The mechanics

The Two Amazon Systems That Make External Traffic Pay

Most agencies run Google Ads and hope. The reason this channel is worth more for Amazon brands than for anyone else comes down to two Amazon systems โ€” one that measures the traffic, and one that pays for it.

Amazon Attribution โ€” the measurement layer

Attribution is Amazon's free measurement tool for brand-registered sellers. It generates a unique tagged link for each campaign, ad group or placement, and reports what that traffic did after it arrived on Amazon.

  • Clicks, detail page views and add-to-carts
  • Purchases and total sales, credited to the tag
  • A last-touch conversion window measured in days โ€” 14 days in the current program
  • New-to-brand reporting for the external traffic that earns it

The honest limitation:Attribution is a measurement layer, not a conversion API. It cannot push Amazon sales back into your Google Ads account as conversions โ€” so we reconcile the two by hand rather than pretending Google's numbers are complete.

Brand Referral Bonus โ€” the incentive layer

When tagged off-Amazon traffic results in a sale, Amazon applies a credit against your future referral fees on that order. The rate is set by Amazon, varies by category, and is published in Seller Central โ€” we check your live rate during the audit rather than quoting a figure that may not apply to you.

  1. Only tagged traffic counts. No Attribution tag, no bonus โ€” even if the visit came from your own ad.
  2. Only off-Amazon traffic counts. Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands are excluded by design.
  3. The credit arrives later. It is applied against future referral fees, not paid out on the day of the sale.
  4. Eligibility is not universal. Brand Registry, a brand representative role and the right selling entity are all required.

Vendors, read this: The Brand Referral Bonus runs through Seller Central. If you sell 1P through Vendor Central, the bonus does not apply to those orders โ€” but external traffic can still be worth running for the demand and ranking effect.

Eligibility checklist โ€” the four things we confirm first

  • Your brand is enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry with a brand representative assigned in Seller Central.
  • Amazon Attribution is available and enabled in your advertising console.
  • The ASINs you want to promote sit in categories with a published bonus rate worth chasing.
  • The listing converts well enough that paid traffic is an investment rather than a leak.

Program terms, rates and eligibility are set by Amazon and change. Everything above is checked against your live account during the audit โ€” nothing on this page is a promise of what Amazon will pay you.

The destination decision

Where the Click Should Land: Direct Link, Bridge Page or Your Own Store

This is the decision that separates external traffic that works from external traffic that quietly loses money. Send the click to the wrong place and you lose either the tracking or the sale โ€” sometimes both.

Google Shopping has a rule the other formats don't

Google Search ads can point at a listing โ€” both Google's and Amazon's terms allow it. Shopping and most Performance Max setups cannot, because Merchant Center expects to verify a domain you own and match a product feed to it. The workable route is a feed, a compliant landing page you control, and a clear "Buy on Amazon" path from there.

How we decide

We start with the tightest intent and the shortest path โ€” direct to the listing โ€” and only add a bridge page when the campaign needs something direct linking cannot give it.

What we never do

Send cold, untargeted traffic at a listing and call it a test. Every campaign is matched to intent and watched for its effect on conversion rate โ€” not just on clicks.

What it needs from your listing

Whatever the destination, the detail page finishes the job. If the main image, price or review position cannot hold up, we fix that first with listing or brand store work.

Our methodology

The Off-Amazon Demand Loop: Six Steps, All Auditable

Nothing goes live on your account until it has been through all six stages, and you get the output of each one. The order matters โ€” skipping straight to campaigns is how brands end up with traffic they cannot attribute.

  1. 01

    Baseline

Record sessions, conversion rate, keyword rank and ad dependency for every ASIN in scope. Without a baseline there is no honest way to prove what the traffic did.

  2. 02

    Eligibility

Confirm Brand Registry status, Attribution access and the live bonus rates for your categories. Flag anything that blocks the credit before money is committed.

  3. 03

    Destination

Decide where each campaign lands, and build the feed, bridge page or store route that decision requires.

  4. 04

    Build

Campaign architecture, keyword plan drawn from Amazon search behaviour, ad copy matched to the listing's real claims, and negative keywords from day one.

  5. 05

    Tag

An Attribution tag per ad group rather than one per account, a UTM convention that survives contact with a media buyer, and GA4 events that show behaviour before the Amazon click.

  6. 06

    Compound

Reinvest what earns, cut what does not, and fold the referral-fee credits, audience data and rank movement back into the next planning round.

Do the maths first

Run Your Own Numbers Before You Spend Anything

Put in what you actually pay for a click and what a unit actually earns you, and see whether external traffic pays for itself on that product.

$

Your average cost per click on the channel you'd use.

%

Unit session percentage from your own Seller Central data.

$

What the product actually sells at, after promotions.

%

What's left after Amazon fees, shipping and cost of goods.

%

Amazon sets this and it varies by category โ€” check your live rate in Seller Central.

On these numbers, each order returns

$8.22

  • Clicks per order8.3
  • Traffic cost per order$7.08
  • Margin per order$11.90
  • Referral-fee credit per order$3.40
  • Break-even cost per click$1.84

It stacks up on these numbers. Each order leaves $8.22 after traffic cost, with $3.40 of that coming from the referral-fee credit. You could pay up to $1.84 per click before this stops making money.

Every figure in this calculator is yours โ€” nothing here is ours, and nothing is saved or sent anywhere. The result is an estimate, not a forecast: it assumes the listing converts at the rate you entered and that the traffic is tagged correctly.

What you receive

What You Get From an External Traffic Engagement

No vague scope. Each of these is a document, a build, or a change you can check. We deliver Google Ads for Amazon as Amazon external traffic management โ€” not general search marketing โ€” with the strategy written down before the first campaign goes live.

  • External traffic audit โ€” current mix, competitor presence on Google, and where external demand is already leaking.
  • Eligibility confirmation โ€” Brand Registry, Attribution access and your live bonus rates by category, checked in your account.
  • Attribution tag architecture โ€” a tag per ad group, with a naming convention your team can read six months later.
  • Destination strategy โ€” direct, bridge or store, with the reasoning written down rather than assumed.
  • Merchant Center feed โ€” built and validated where Shopping or Performance Max is in play.
  • Landing pages โ€” built or briefed, with a compliant path through to Amazon.
  • Campaign architecture โ€” Search, Shopping, YouTube and Performance Max, structured so each can be judged on its own.
  • Keyword plan from Amazon data โ€” built on the language shoppers actually use, not on a generic keyword tool.
  • Negative keyword structure โ€” in place from day one, so spend never starts broad.
  • Ad copy matched to the listing โ€” no promises in the ad that the page does not keep.
  • Tracking setup โ€” GA4 and Tag Manager events, UTM conventions, and Attribution reconciliation.
  • Reporting dashboard โ€” attributed sales, add-to-cart, new-to-brand, credit earned and rank movement in one view.
  • Monthly reallocation โ€” spend moved to what is earning, cut from what is not, across every channel in the mix.
  • Compliance review โ€” ad claims, landing page claims and listing claims checked against each other.

How this joins up with the rest of your account

External traffic does not sit in a corner. It changes what happens everywhere else.

  • With Amazon PPC โ€” external demand raises the ceiling that your Sponsored Ads harvest from.
  • With Amazon DSP โ€” off-Amazon campaigns build the audiences that DSP retargeting then works on.
  • With SEO โ€” external sales velocity feeds the same ranking inputs your Amazon SEO work targets.
  • With creative โ€” the messages that win the click off Amazon tell you what belongs in your A+ Content.

Measurement

How You'll Know It's Working

External traffic is the easiest channel to misread, so we agree what counts before anything goes live.

Signal 01

Attributed sales

The orders Amazon credits to each tag. This is the number the bonus is calculated on, so it is the number we protect.

What we do when it moves: Low sales with healthy clicks means the listing or the price is the problem, not the campaign. We fix that before adding spend.

Signal 02

Add-to-cart rate

How much intent the traffic carries. External clicks should behave differently from Amazon search clicks โ€” this is where you see it.

What we do when it moves: A weak add-to-cart rate on strong traffic means a message mismatch between the ad and the page. We tighten the promise, not the budget.

Signal 03

New-to-brand share

How much of the demand is genuinely new to you rather than a shopper you would have won anyway.

What we do when it moves: Low new-to-brand on branded terms means you are paying for sales you already had. That spend gets redirected to demand that is actually new.

Signal 04

Referral-fee credit earned

What Amazon has credited back, reconciled against what the campaign cost. The credit is a fee offset, not revenue โ€” we report it as such.

What we do when it moves: If eligible sales are not being credited, it is almost always a tagging problem. Tag discipline gets audited before we touch anything else.

Signal 05

Rank movement on target terms

Whether the extra sales velocity is showing up in organic position for the terms you care about.

What we do when it moves: Rank that moves while external traffic runs is the compounding effect. Rank that does not tells us the listing, not the traffic, is the constraint.

Signal 06

Blended cost of sale

Total ad spend across Amazon and off-Amazon against total revenue. This is the only number that shows whether the account as a whole got healthier.

What we do when it moves: If the blend improves while Amazon spend holds, external traffic is doing its job. If it only improves because Amazon spend fell, we say so.

What external traffic can move

  • How many people discover the product at all
  • Sales velocity, and the ranking pressure that follows it
  • How much of your demand comes from a single platform
  • Whether you own an audience afterwards

What no external campaign can control

  • Your price, and what competitors charge this week
  • Review count and rating already sitting on the ASIN
  • Stock levels, Buy Box eligibility and delivery speed
  • Amazon's bonus rates, attribution window and program terms

We tell you which column a number belongs to before you read the report, so a flat month is never presented to you as a win.

Weekly
What changed. Spend and pacing, tag health, any disapproved ads or feed errors, and whether tracking is still firing.
Monthly
What moved. Attributed sales, add-to-cart behaviour, new-to-brand share, credit earned, rank movement, and where next month's budget goes.
Quarterly
What's next. Channel mix rebalanced, destination strategy revisited, bonus rates re-checked, and off-Amazon expansion scoped.

The honest part

What External Traffic Can and Can't Do

Every one of these is a question a serious brand should ask before spending a cent off Amazon.

Won't colder traffic wreck my conversion rate?

It can โ€” if the traffic is untargeted, or if it lands on the wrong page. That is why intent matching and the destination decision come before the campaign build, and why we watch conversion rate on the promoted ASINs specifically.

Google Ads can't see my Amazon sales โ€” so how do you optimise?

It can't, and we don't pretend otherwise. Amazon Attribution measures the Amazon side of the journey and we reconcile it against Google's data by hand.

Isn't the bonus just a credit rather than real money?

Correct. It is applied against future referral fees, not paid out as cash. We model it as a margin improvement and never as revenue.

Do I need a website for this?

Not for Google Search โ€” those ads can point straight at your listing. You do need a domain you control for Shopping and most Performance Max setups.

We sell through Vendor Central, not Seller Central.

Then the Brand Referral Bonus does not apply to those orders โ€” the program runs through Seller Central. External traffic can still be worth running for the demand and ranking effect.

Will you promise a ranking improvement?

No. Sales velocity is one ranking input among several. What we will do is measure rank movement alongside sales from the first week and report it honestly โ€” including when nothing moves.

Fit

Who This Is For โ€” And Who It Isn't

We would rather lose the work than take it on in the wrong conditions. If the right-hand column describes you more closely, we will say so on the call and point you somewhere more useful.

Start this if

  • Your brand is registered, or you want help getting it registered
  • Your listings already convert and you want more of the right traffic
  • Your margin absorbs a paid click before any credit is counted
  • You want to be less dependent on one platform's auction
  • You'll judge it on blended numbers, not on last-click alone

Don't start this if

  • The listing can't convert yet โ€” fix that first, it's cheaper
  • You're not brand registered and can't become brand registered
  • Margin is too thin to take a paid click at all
  • You need the payback inside a fortnight
  • You want a channel nobody ever has to look at again

Off-Amazon traffic is not a Google Ads retainer with an Amazon logo on the proposal. It is planning work that starts before the ads exist: where the click lands, which Amazon system records the sale, and what has to be true in your catalog before you spend anything.

The questions we ask first are the ones most agencies skip โ€” because the answers decide whether this channel pays:

  • Do your listings convert well enough on their own to justify paying for the click?
  • Are Brand Registry, Brand Representative and Attribution tags actually live?
  • Should the campaign land on the listing, a bridge page or your own store?
  • How will the Brand Referral Bonus be credited against your referral fees?
  • What can the tracking see โ€” and what will it never see?
  • Which marketplaces qualify, and which don't?

You get every answer in writing during the audit, before any budget is committed.

What happens when

What the First Ninety Days Look Like

No black box. This is the sequence, what you get at each stage, and the one decision we ask you to make before any of it starts.

Weeks 1โ€“2

Audit & eligibility

Baseline recorded, Brand Registry and Attribution access confirmed, live bonus rates checked for your categories, and your competitors' presence on Google mapped.

You receive: A written recommendation โ€” including "don't do this yet" if that is the honest answer.

Weeks 3โ€“4

Build

Destination decided and built, feed created where Shopping applies, tracking and UTM conventions installed, campaign structure and keyword plan written.

You receive: The full plan to approve before a single campaign goes live.

Weeks 5โ€“8

Launch & learn

Campaigns go live in a controlled structure, not all at once. Early signal is read on intent and add-to-cart behaviour before anything is scaled.

You receive: Weekly reporting and a clear list of what is being cut and why.

Weeks 9โ€“12

Scale & compound

Spend moves to what earns, off-Amazon channels are considered in earnest, and referral-fee credits, audience data and rank movement fold back into the next plan.

You receive: A quarterly review and the next quarter's priorities.

Google Ads for Amazon: The Questions We Get Asked

What is Google Ads for Amazon?
It is the practice of running Google advertising โ€” Search, Shopping, YouTube and Performance Max โ€” to send shoppers to an Amazon listing, a bridge page or your brand store. Done properly, every link carries an Amazon Attribution tag so the resulting sale is measured, and where the brand qualifies, part of the referral fee is credited back through the Brand Referral Bonus.
Can you run Google Ads to an Amazon listing?
Yes. Nothing in Google's or Amazon's terms prevents sending paid search traffic to an Amazon product page. The exception is Shopping and most Performance Max setups, which normally require a verified domain you own and a compliant landing page that matches the feed.
Can you run Google Shopping ads directly to an Amazon listing?
Not in the standard setup. Merchant Center expects to verify a domain you control, and Amazon does not provide a way to point Shopping ads straight at a listing. The workable route is a product feed, a compliant landing page you own, and a clear path from that page through to Amazon.
How do I track my Google Ads sales on Amazon?
Google Ads conversion tracking on Amazon has one hard limit, so we work around it rather than pretend it away. Amazon Attribution generates a tagged link for each campaign or ad group and reports what that traffic did on Amazon โ€” clicks, add-to-carts and purchases โ€” inside a 14-day last-touch conversion window. It cannot send conversion events back into Google Ads, so we reconcile the two data sets rather than relying on one.
Should I send Google Ads to a landing page or straight to Amazon?
It depends on what the campaign needs. Direct to the listing is fastest and has the least friction, and it suits proven listings with tight intent. A bridge page costs more to build but gives you tracking, email capture, remarketing audiences and access to Shopping. We recommend one per campaign rather than one for the whole account.
Do I need my own website to run this?
Not for Google Search campaigns. You will need a domain you control if you want Shopping or most Performance Max campaigns, because Merchant Center verifies the domain behind the feed. If you do not have one, we build the smallest compliant version needed to run the channel properly.
What is the Amazon Brand Referral Bonus?
It is Amazon's incentive for driving traffic from outside Amazon. When a tagged off-Amazon click leads to a sale, Amazon applies a credit against your future referral fees on that order. The rate is set by Amazon and varies by category, and the credit is a fee offset rather than a cash payment.
Who is eligible for the Brand Referral Bonus?
Amazon Brand Referral Bonus eligibility rests on four things: enrollment in Amazon Brand Registry with a brand representative role, selling through Seller Central rather than Vendor Central, a Professional selling plan, and Amazon Attribution tags on the external traffic. On-Amazon advertising does not qualify. Rates, terms and eligible marketplaces are set by Amazon and change, so we confirm what applies to your account during the audit.
How much is the Amazon Brand Referral Bonus?
Amazon sets the rate, publishes it in Seller Central and varies it by category, price tier and shipping configuration, so any figure quoted on an agency page is an average rather than a promise. We read your live rates during the audit and show them to you for your own ASINs โ€” that is the only number worth planning against.
How does the credit actually show up?
As a credit against future referral fees, applied on Amazon's own schedule rather than the day of the sale. We report it separately from revenue so you can see exactly what the campaign cost and exactly what came back, and we flag any eligible sales that were not credited โ€” which is almost always a tagging problem.
Does the Brand Referral Bonus work for vendors (Vendor Central)?
No. The Brand Referral Bonus runs through Seller Central, so first-party Vendor orders do not qualify. External traffic can still be worth running for the demand and sales velocity it creates โ€” we tell you which case applies to you before any budget is committed.
How is this different from Amazon PPC management?
Amazon PPC captures demand that already exists inside Amazon; external traffic creates demand before the shopper gets there. Run Amazon PPC and Google Ads together and you cover both halves of that journey. They are complementary, and the healthiest accounts run both.
Which off-Amazon channels do you manage?
Google Search, Shopping, YouTube and Performance Max as the core, with Meta, TikTok, email and creator or affiliate traffic added where the category justifies it. Every channel is tagged the same way so the results are comparable.
Will external traffic hurt my conversion rate?
It can, if the traffic is poorly targeted or lands on the wrong page. We match intent to destination, avoid sending raw social traffic straight at a listing, and monitor conversion rate on the promoted ASINs specifically. If it falls, we change the traffic โ€” we do not wait for the listing to absorb it.
Do Google Ads help Amazon rankings?
Indirectly, through Amazon sales velocity rather than any published credit: external traffic does help Amazon ranking when it converts, because additional sales at additional velocity are one of the inputs Amazon uses to rank products. Amazon does not publish the weighting, so we measure rank movement alongside sales and report it honestly rather than promising a position.
How long before we see anything?
Attribution data appears as soon as traffic is running, so you can see clicks, add-to-carts and purchases quickly. Referral-fee credits are applied on Amazon's schedule, which is slower. Ranking effects take longest of all and are the least predictable โ€” which is why we set expectations on all three separately.
What do you need from us to start?
The ASINs or store you want reviewed, the marketplaces you sell in, your Brand Registry status, access to Seller Central and the advertising console, and enough margin information to judge whether the traffic makes sense. If you have Google Ads or GA4 history, we will ask for that too.
Do you work with brands outside the United States?
Yes. We optimize for every Amazon marketplace, and keyword research is run natively per marketplace rather than translated. Note that Brand Referral Bonus eligibility is tied to specific stores and program terms, so we check what applies to your marketplaces before building a case on it.
Are you a Google Ads agency for Amazon sellers, or an Amazon marketing agency running Google Ads?
Both, and that is the point. The Google Ads work is run by the same team that handles your Amazon account, so the off-Amazon plan and the on-Amazon plan are never split across two suppliers.
Is external traffic worth it for Amazon sellers?
It is worth it when three things are already true: the listing converts without help, the margin absorbs a paid click before any credit is counted, and the brand is registered so the traffic can be tagged and credited. If one of those three is missing, the money belongs in the listing first.
