Amazon Air Freight Now Comes With Zero Placement Fees. The Catch Is in the Carton Count.
Amazon announcement: 29 September 2026 · Air SMP reported to begin at the start of Q4 (1 October 2026)
Amazon has added two air freight products to Amazon Global Logistics, and one of them removes a fee sellers have spent years trying to avoid. Air SMP flies inventory from China into a locked fulfilment centre in each of the five US regions in an estimated 7 to 10 days, with no FBA inbound placement service fee and no category surcharges on apparel, electronics or lithium-battery products.
Economy Air is the cheaper, slower alternative: 11 to 15 days from Shanghai or Shenzhen into Los Angeles. Both were announced on 29 September 2026, which puts them in front of sellers at the exact moment they are finalising Q4 restocks. Only one of the two carries the fee waiver — and that distinction decides whether this is a discount or a detour for your account.

1. What Amazon Actually Launched
- Air SMP — air freight with Seller Managed Placement. Inventory is split at origin and flown directly to a locked fulfilment centre inside each of Amazon’s five US regions.
- Economy Air — a lower-cost air freight option that routes every shipment into Los Angeles.
Both are positioned against the same problem: ocean transit is too slow when a deadline is already close. Amazon names three use cases — peak-season preparation, recovery from a stockout, and launching a product on a tight schedule. Those are rescue scenarios, not routine replenishment.
2. Air SMP: Speed, Placement Control and Zero Placement Fees
Air SMP is the product behind the headline. Three design choices separate it from standard air freight.
You choose the placement before the freight moves
Under normal FBA, Amazon decides where your inventory lands after it arrives at the network. Air SMP reverses that sequence. You split the shipment in China and assign cartons to a specific fulfilment centre in each of the five US regions, so the destination is known before the pallet is built. Amazon describes each region as tied to a single fulfilment centre rather than distributed at random.
The transit time is measured in days, not weeks
Amazon estimates 7 to 10 calendar days from origin pickup, supported by daily flights departing from Shanghai and Hong Kong. Against ocean freight, that is the difference between restocking this month and restocking next quarter.
The FBA inbound placement service fee is zero
Air SMP shipments carry no FBA inbound placement service fee. Amazon also states there are no additional surcharges on apparel, electronics, or products powered by lithium batteries — three categories that normally attract freight premiums. Reporting on the launch adds two operational details: live unload at the destination fulfilment centre for faster intake, and consolidation of multiple shipments heading to the same region.
3. Economy Air: Cheaper, Slower and Los Angeles Only
Economy Air is the value option. Estimated transit is 11 to 15 days from Shanghai or Shenzhen to Los Angeles, at rates Amazon describes as below its standard AGL air service.
Two limitations matter. First, every Economy Air shipment lands at a single US destination. Sellers whose demand is concentrated on the East Coast will absorb the onward ground transit and its cost themselves. Second, Amazon’s announcement ties the zero placement fee specifically to Air SMP. It does not extend that waiver to Economy Air, and sellers should not assume it applies.
Note: Reported, not confirmed by Amazon: independent analysis estimates Economy Air costs roughly two to three times ocean freight, and places typical China-to-US ocean transit at 30 to 45 days against 3 to 7 days for express air. Treat these as planning estimates rather than Amazon figures.
4. Air SMP vs Economy Air: Side by Side
| Air SMP | Economy Air | |
|---|---|---|
| Ships from | Shanghai, Hong Kong | Shanghai, Shenzhen |
| Ships to | Five US regions, one locked FC each | Los Angeles |
| Estimated transit | 7–10 days from pickup | 11–15 days |
| Flights | Daily | Not stated by Amazon |
| FBA inbound placement fee | $0 | No waiver stated |
| Category surcharges | None on apparel, electronics, lithium batteries | Not stated by Amazon |
| Rate | Published in AGL portal only | Below standard AGL air |
Amazon has not published rates for either service. The portal is the only place where pricing, cut-offs and availability can be confirmed against your actual shipment.
5. The Catch: Five Cartons, Five Fees, One Placement Saving
This is where the $0 headline needs testing before it reaches a budget.
Most air freight shipments sit well under 10 CBM. That changes the arithmetic. The relevant calculation is not “placement fee saved”. It is: placement fee saved, minus five fixed freight fees, minus the premium of air over ocean. For a large, dense shipment the saving can be real. For a two-carton emergency top-up, the fee waiver may be the most expensive part of the deal.
None of that makes Air SMP a bad product. It makes it a product that rewards sellers who model it before booking. These are the four questions worth answering first:
- What is the per-shipment fixed fee, and is it charged once or once for each of the five regional shipments?
- What would my FBA inbound placement service fee have been on the identical shipment?
- What is the landed cost per unit by air versus ocean, once the cost of being out of stock is included?
- Do I have five matching cartons per product, and is my item standard-size?
6. When Air Freight Actually Makes Sense
Amazon names peak preparation, stockout recovery and tight launches. The thread running through all three is opportunity cost rather than transport cost.
7. How to Book, and What to Confirm First
- Book through the AGL program portal in Seller Central. Rates, service terms and booking steps live there; Amazon’s announcement published neither rates nor a start date.
- If you have not used AGL before, the portal walks new users through account setup and their first shipment booking.
- Reporting indicates Economy Air was already live at announcement, while Air SMP was scheduled to begin at the start of Q4 — 1 October 2026. Amazon’s own post gives no date, so confirm availability in the portal before building a plan around it.
- Amazon’s post does not state eligibility requirements. Reporting indicates AGL generally requires FBA registration, an active AGL account with a payment method, and Importer of Record documentation.
8. Amazon Air Freight: Are Zero Placement Fees Worth the Carton Split?
It is more accurate to read Air SMP as a placement product that happens to fly than an air freight product that happens to be fee-free. Amazon is buying behaviour it wants — distributed, regionally balanced inventory — and paying for it with a fee waiver. That is a reasonable trade, provided you genuinely want your stock distributed across five regions.
If your demand is already concentrated in two regions, or your shipment is small, the waiver is a discount on a structure you did not need. Run the five-way maths first, and use Air SMP for the shipment that must land rather than the shipment you would merely like to arrive sooner.
- Model the shipment in the portal before you commit to Air SMP. Ask specifically whether the fixed fee is charged per regional shipment.
- Treat Economy Air as the default air option unless its Los Angeles destination and the absence of a fee waiver both suit you.
- Do not apply the zero placement fee to Economy Air in any internal costing sheet — Amazon has not extended it.
- Reserve air freight for hero SKUs where a stockout has a measurable revenue cost, and keep ocean as the default lane.
- Re-check availability and cut-off dates in the portal, since Amazon published neither.
9. What to Do Next
Open the AGL portal, price your next genuine rescue shipment against both services and your existing ocean plan, and decide on numbers rather than on the size of the headline. If the maths works, Air SMP is one of the more useful logistics tools Amazon has released this year. If it does not, Economy Air still gets your inventory to the US weeks ahead of a container — which, in the last week of October, may be the only thing that matters.
